Cycling through Lecce, you will get to know and explore the main historical sites of the city better known as the Florence of the South.
The guided tour starts from Porta Napoli, where you will be welcomed by the imposing Obelisk, built in 1822 based on a design by Luigi Cipolla, to commemorate the arrival in Lecce of Ferdinando Di Borbone. In its four facades it tells the mythological history of the compartments of Terra D’Otranto. In front, the majestic door that gives access to the ancient city, built in Lecce stone in 1548 in honor of Charles V, does not go unnoticed. The itinerary continues along Via Giuseppe Palmieri between churches and baroque palaces, along this road you come across the Church of San Luigi or Santa Maria della Porta, the Paisiello theatre, Palazzo Palmieri built in the 16th century but remodeled in the Baroque era. You will reach Piazza Duomo, a rare example of a “closed square” and one of the most beautiful in Italy. To access this square you have to cross the propylaea, here we find the beautiful baroque cathedral dedicated to the Assumption, the 72 meter high bell tower, the “L” shaped bishop’s palace which recalls the carousel of the 70s and the Seminary palace today seat of the Diocesan Museum. You will continue along the main street until you reach the Ex Convent of the Teatini with the adjoining Church of Sant’Irene, patron saint of Lecce before being replaced by Sant’Oronzo. The itinerary continues, crossing Piazzetta Castromediano, until reaching the basilica of Santa Croce, symbol of the Lecce baroque and the adjacent convent or Palazzo dei Celestini. Then, the suggestive Piazza Sant’Oronzo which houses the amphitheater an extraordinary piece of Roman Lecce, the Sedile, the small church of San Marco and the column which supports the statue of the protector Sant’Oronzo.
Next, you will pedal in the direction of Gallipoli crossing the coastal landscapes of Porto Casereo.
