The public visit to the Castellana Caves unfolds along an easily accessible route and with the expert presence of multilingual guides. An extraordinary excursion into the caves approximately 70 meters deep in an astonishing setting of stalactites, stalagmites, fossils, cavities and caves with fantastic names.
The complete visit to the Castellana Caves starts from the Grave, the first and largest cave in the underground system, the only environment naturally connected to the outside: 100 meters long, 50 wide, 60 deep. It is characterized by the presence, on the ground, of numerous stalagmites among which a majestic group stands out in the center (called “The Cyclops”).
The visit to the Caves continues through corridors and other environments, very varied in shape and size.
Stalactites, stalagmites, curtains, columns and precious crystals are looming along the entire route. The names of the different environments crossed, due to the characteristic shapes taken by the rock, are the fruit of the imagination of the first explorers.
We find the myth of the Roman She-Wolf, various Monuments, the Owl, the devoutly kneeling Madonna, the Serpent, the Altar, the Precipice, the Desert Corridor, the inverted Column (Tower of Pisa), the Red Corridor, the Dome.
The magnificence finds no end and every feature fascinates the mind and captivates the gaze until the silent amazement of the last star: the most beautiful cave of the underground system, the White Cave, defined for the richness and whiteness of the alabaster, the “most shining of the world.”
